Dr. Cousens' Blog: Empowering you to live consciously through scientifically researched information

"We live in an age of headlines and soundbites.  The internet is packed full of information but typically runs low on wisdom.  This is the reason I write such long and comprehensive blogs.  My work is becoming known for its in depth analysis of today’s issues. My articles are repeated attempts to provide people with a substantial understanding of the issues at hand, and the wisdom to know how to address these issues in their personal lives. I typically provide an article summary, which distills the main points for those in a hurry.  While some people think in soundbites, I tend to think in chapters and books.  My approach is holistic, and, as such, requires that I present both a spiritual and a scientific overview in my ongoing mission of merging the heavens and the earth.  As a scientist, a medical doctor, and an artist of consciousness, providing my readers with the option for depth is my way of serving humanity."

PERSPECTIVES ON GLOBAL WARMING

Posted by: The Culture of Life on 26/04/2010

At the Juice Fast to Stop Global Warming hosted by Agape International Spiritual Center in L.A, 90% of the fasters committed to being vegan. The key thing to understand is that we are really in severe imbalance with the planet, and there is one main cause.  It is called animal agriculture. This main cause is the big cow in the middle of the living room of the environmentalists.

If you look very closely, the environmentalists in the US are all talking about carbon dioxide as the big problem.  No one mentions animal agriculture.  Now there are reasons for that, which are actually stated, and that is: “We do not want to go against the animal/ dairy industry and hunters.”  So people are willing to sacrifice the planet for this reason. The real inconvenient truth is that carbon dioxide is not the main cause of global warming. The main cause of global warming is animal agriculture.

The fact that animal agriculture is the main cause of global warming has been scientifically proven by Dr. James Hansen, who is head of the global warming research for NASA, and is the grandfather of global warming research. According to him, carbon dioxide is 9% of the problem— at best. According to Dr. Hansen, the aerosols (which are cooling) that are released with some of the sources of carbon dioxide help to nullify even that 9%. That is an impressive statement.

The truth is you can do all your improvements with electricity, use as many Prius cars as possible and go as green as you want (which is a good thing), but you really aren’t going to make much difference in terms of global warming (weather instability), because carbon dioxide isn’t really the big problem. The big problem is methane.

    • Thank you for such an information-packed and sensitive article. First of all, it was an excellent way for me to brush up on some of the “reasons” why I am conducting my life the way I am. Being a vegan with a raw-foodism tendency, having already gone on fasts by myself (to the utter despair of my family), and living in a place where the vast majority of people have not even heard of the word “vegan”, let alone embraced this kind of lifestyle, and not in their wildest dream entertained the notion that man can survive and thrive without eating for days and weeks on end, I am frequently assailed with all kinds of negative feedback. To be honest, there’s often so much hostility around me, be it overt or veiled, that I confess I have sometimes given in just for the sake of “group harmony”, and I ended up eating what I know I shouldn’t. Also, when people ask me, “But why on earth are you a vegetarian???? And gee, what the hell is a vegan??????” Oh God, there are moments when hearing this silly question for the umpteenth time just makes me so very tired, and then I just shrug it off, and I say, “Well, I do it because I like it”, which by the way happens to be the major reason. Still, it feels like a sort of “cop-out” when I’m questioned and I don’t’ get into the nitty-gritty details. I have in fact fallen back on this I-do-it-because-I-like-it subterfuge so many times that I had even forgotten the objective, black-and-white, based-on-science-and-statistics pieces of evidence that support my choices. People around me are always coming up with their own statistics and citing authorities and ridiculing my preferences, and sometimes I find it all rather daunting and I even question my own sanity. Even though at this point in my life the “reason” why I act the way I do is purely personal and I need no “proof” that my behavior is appropriate, it’s reassuring to be reminded that (1) no, I am not a lunatic; and (2), yes, there’s a lot of concrete research whose findings are in tandem with my options Secondly, this article is a veritable goldmine for those who are willing to discard their outdated notions and accept the light of truth. Indeed, as soon as I can I will be translating the article into Portuguese, to make the information available to a larger number of people. It is a joy and an honor to be part of the Tree of Life family. May you continue helping people embrace truth. Peace, love and light Gisele Guimaraes Serra Salum
